History Preface
It is with pleasure that our Virtual Museum brings to you a narrative including images of the history of Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro. This narrative is guided by research and by the study of documents and artifacts in the Augusta County Historical Society plus those from private collections. The research included in this Virtual Museum is a collaborative effort of individuals dedicated to preserving the history of Augusta County, Virginia. This research will continue for years to come.
In the absence of period documents, artifacts with family history, are often the only tangible evidence available when studying early history. The intent of this Virtual Museum is to provide the viewer an overview of the history that shaped the culture of the Augusta County frontier and the centuries of development since 1738 that has touched the lives of so many.
In 1927, Fred Barnard, wrote; “A picture is worth 10,000 words”. This Virtual Museum has incorporated images of artifacts, buildings, individuals, land, maps and more that have influenced the culture and created the history of Augusta County. We hope that this visual journey will have a lasting impression on the viewer. Perhaps while viewing this Virtual Museum, you will consider becoming involved in our virtual journey by providing research or information that will preserve important history of Augusta County.
